Councillor’s Paul Sullivan and Geoff Winnard, councillors for Bingley Rural Ward, spoke out in support of rebuilding Bingley Pool at Bradford Council’s meeting earlier in the week [15th March].
There is currently speculation that the new Labour Government is to cancel the £14.5m funding to reopen the pool which was announced in the Spring Budget.
The councillors introduced a motion calling upon Bradford Council to press the Labour Government for early confirmation that they are still committed to funding a new swimming pool in Bingley. They also asked Bradford to give priority to retain this vital project in the City's revised Capital Programme. Cllr Sullivan urged the Council to give priority to funding Bingley Pool because of overwhelming community support, over another pool proposed at Squire Lane in Bradford. Many residents in Bingley Rural would again benefit from having the pool back up and running, not just those living in the Bingley Ward.
Cllr Winnard noted that ‘one of the first things the things the Labour Government did was to effectively cancel the biggest investment in Bingley in a generation’.
He called on Bradford Council to do all it could to ensure that the £14.5m promised for a new Bingley pool is finally honoured!’
The Labour Government's statements regarding a black hole legacy inherited from the previous Conservative Government have already been debunked as myth. Labour just wants to allocate the funds, not yet paid out, to their own pet projects.
