Bradford Council has now confirmed that it intends to proceed with the sale of the resident’s car park on Skirrow Street, Cottingley despite strong opposition from local community groups, Bingley Town Council, and ward councillors.
In response to a written question from Bingley Rural Councillor Geoff Winnard, the Labour council confirmed that:
“The review has been completed and it has been determined that the car park remains surplus to the council's operational requirements. Rather than entering the car park into an auction the car park will be offered for sale by private treaty to maximise the opportunity for residents, the Town Council, or other interested parties to enter into negotiations to acquire it.”
Councillor Winnard said “The decision is slap in the face to residents who fought such a strong and vigorous local campaign to prevent the sale of this important community asset. It’s clear that the Bradford Council decision makers just don’t understand the potential impact the loss of the car park will have on residents living in the old Cottingley Village.”
The council are anticipating that they will raise c£45,000 with the sale. as part of their proposal to raise £100 millions from asset sales.
