We welcome the Cass Review into gender identity services for under-18s following the sharp rise in the number of children questioning their gender as we stick to our long-term plan to improve NHS care and protect children.
- Some children have very complex needs and must be treated with great care and compassion. That is why we welcome Dr Cass’s expert clinical review, which urges extreme caution when it comes to young people seeking to make irreversible changes. We have already acted on Dr Cass’s interim report, by issuing guidance to schools and ending the routine use of puberty blockers, and we are carefully considering the fuller review’s findings.
- Today’s report marks an important step forward in our understanding of this issue. We will always make sure our children are protected so they can live happy and health lives. What is in their best interests will always be our priority and will always come first.
