If the Government is correct and the new Inheritance Tax will only affect a few of the very largest farms why are they bothering to do it? They only want this new tax to raise revenue, so it stands to reason that this is going to affect a lot of farming families.
Labour have broken their promise to British farmers with the Family Farm Tax.
- Labour’s Family Farm Tax will stop farms being passed to the next generation. Those inheriting their family farm will have to sell parts of their farms in order to pay off the tax or they will have a heavy burden to carry over the 10 years in which they have to pay it.
- Threatening our food security. Farmers are already squeezed by how much they are paid by the large supermarkets. Their profits are low. If farmers choose to give up their stressful life and stop producing food we will all have to go without.
- Risking jobs. Many jobs on a farm are manual. There aren't machines available to do everything! The annual increase in minimum wage means that farms can afford fewer staff and the pressure for farmers and their families to do the work (affectively unpaid) goes up.
- Leading to food prices rising. Supply and demand! If there are fewer British Farmers prepared to produce food locally we will have to either import more food or pay higher prices to get the smaller share of the market. Non-seasonal vegetables are always more expensive than seasonal vegetables. Imagine that the seasonal vegetables were always in short supply... the prices would stay high!
